To work as a Special Education Teacher in Illinois, candidates must meet the following requirements:

• Hold a valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with a Special Education (LBS1) Endorsement.
• Possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in Special Education or a related field.
• Pass the required Illinois Licensure Testing System (ILTS) exams for Special Education.
• Complete a state-approved educator preparation program.
• Meet any continuing education and professional development requirements set by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
