Position Overview:
As a School Orientation & Mobility Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in helping students with visual impairments develop essential skills for safe and independent travel. You will work closely with educational staff, students, and their families to foster a supportive and inclusive learning atmosphere.
Qualifications:
- Must have Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation & Mobility or a related field from an accredited institution
- Must have a National Certification in Orientation & Mobility
- Must have excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Must be a team player with the ability to work independently
- Prior experience working with children with visual impairments in a school setting is preferred
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct Assessments: Evaluate students' orientation and mobility needs through comprehensive assessments. Your expertise will guide individualized plans that truly make a difference.
- Develop Individualized Plans: Craft and implement tailored orientation and mobility plans designed to meet each student’s unique needs and goals.
- Provide Direct Instruction: Teach students effective techniques for navigating various environments, including school, home, and community settings. Your instruction will empower them with the skills they need for independence.
- Collaborate with Staff: Work in tandem with teachers, paraprofessionals, and other support staff to seamlessly integrate orientation and mobility goals into students' daily routines.
- Family Support: Educate and support families, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to reinforce orientation and mobility techniques at home.
- Maintain Documentation: Keep accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, session notes, and other essential documentation.
