Once the first day of the year hits, we are programmed to make some important lifestyle changes that will take us into the new year on the right foot. Many of us start a gym membership or take up a new form of cooking. Whatever it may be, try not to be discouraged when you feel your efforts waning. Here are some tricks that may help to keep you on the right track and keep those New Year’s goals running all year long:

Define Your Goals

The more detail you can put into your resolution, the more you set up your future self to achieve them. You know your strengths, weaknesses and what keeps you motivated. Use these qualities to help shape your goals and how you plan on getting there. Be sure not to bite off more than you can chew when it comes to defining your goals. Less can certainly be more when choosing what personal accomplishments you’d like to achieve. Perhaps consider choosing 2-3 goals. Choose goals that align with your personal interests, hobbies and profession that are within reason to achieve. Set yourself up for a win!

Track Your Progress

Keep track of what you’re doing to achieve your goal such as a journal or calendar. Lists are a great way to stay on track with taking steps towards your goal(s). You can use Google Calendar to make task lists and once finished, check it off the list. Seeing the task and giving it a time slot in your day is an important way to stay on track. Seeing it on the schedule makes it a part of your day and once it’s been completed, you can feel the sense of fulfillment wash over you. Mile markers will help you track your progress so be sure to create a motivational system that works with your lifestyle.

You can still maintain your own separate personal goals but having a friend to keep you accountable will help to encourage and motivate. The key to finding the perfect accountability partner is someone who you can depend on to check in on a regular basis. You can choose this timeframe together whether it’s daily, weekly or monthly check-ins. Finding an accountability partner is a great way to stay on track and motivate you to follow through with your goals.

Create A Consistent Routine

Creating a consistent routine may require a bit of creative thinking depending on your schedule. For example, if your goal is take a daily jog around your neighborhood but have to take a business trip, consider using the hotel gym instead. There are certainly creative alternatives to achieving your goals however staying on track with your routine is important to achieving your end goal. Creating structure around your routine eliminates stress and results in efficiency. These are each key components when working to achieve a goal.

Don’t Give Up

Be sure to try your best but don’t be too hard on yourself. If you don’t meet a daily task within your goals, try again the next day. The overall end result of your goals is to better yourself and that includes learning to give yourself grace. Be good to yourself and try your best!
