Position Overview:
We are seeking a qualified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (O&M) to provide direct services to K–12 students with visual impairments across school sites in Sarasota, FL for the 2025–2026 academic year. The O&M Specialist will help students develop the skills necessary to navigate school, home, and community environments safely and independently.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct functional vision assessments and orientation and mobility evaluations
Develop and implement individualized O&M instructional programs
Provide direct instruction in orientation techniques, cane usage, street crossings, public transportation navigation, and environmental awareness
Collaborate with teachers of the visually impaired (TVIs), general education staff, special educators, and families to support IEP goals
Participate in IEP meetings and provide input on student progress, goals, and recommended services
Maintain detailed and accurate documentation of services and student progress
Travel between multiple school sites to deliver services as needed
Stay current on best practices and assistive technology relevant to orientation and mobility training
Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Orientation & Mobility or related field
Certification through ACVREP (Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals)
Experience working with children and youth with visual impairments in educational settings preferred
Strong knowledge of instructional techniques for O&M and understanding of relevant federal and state education laws
Excellent communication, documentation, and time management skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a school environment
Must be eligible to work in a public school setting in Illinois
