Position Overview:
We are currently seeking a highly skilled and committed Sign Language Interpreter / American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor to support students who are deaf or hard of hearing in the Tallahassee, FL metropolitan area. This role serves a dual purpose—providing sign language interpretation in educational settings and delivering ASL instruction to students, staff, and families as needed.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate fluency in ASL, professional interpreting skills, and a strong dedication to fostering inclusive learning environments that promote communication equity.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide accurate and effective sign language interpretation for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in classroom and school-related settings.
  • Facilitate communication between students, educators, school staff, and peers.
  • Adjust interpreting techniques to match individual student needs and classroom content.
  • Deliver ASL instruction to students, educators, and/or parents to enhance language development and communication skills.
  • Collaborate with special education teams and participate in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and compliance with ethical standards as outlined by RID or relevant certification bodies.
  • Support student participation in academic, extracurricular, and social activities within the school environment.

Qualifications:
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in ASL Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field.
  • Valid certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Level 3.5 or higher, or equivalent Florida-recognized credentials.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and strong command of spoken and written English.
  • Experience in educational settings with K-12 students preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with educators, administrators, and families.
