Job Title: Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) 

Location: New Orleans, LA 

Position Type: Full-Time (Part-Time options may be considered)

Job Details: 

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to join our team in New Orleans, LA. The TVI will support students with visual impairments across a range of educational settings, ensuring they receive equitable access to the curriculum and necessary life skills development. This role is vital to promoting independence, confidence, and academic success among our students. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide direct and consultative special education services to students (birth-22 years) who are blind, low vision, or have multiple disabilities. 

  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals specific to visual impairment needs. 

  • Adapt instructional materials, including creating braille, large print, and tactile graphics. 

  • Teach compensatory skills such as braille literacy, assistive technology, orientation and mobility support (in collaboration with O&M specialists), and activities of daily living. 

  • Collaborate with general education teachers, therapists, specialists, and families to ensure an inclusive educational experience. 

  • Conduct functional vision assessments (FVA) and learning media assessments (LMA). 

  • Advocate for accessible educational environments and resources. 

  • Attend and participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, and professional development sessions. 

  • Provide training and support to staff and families regarding visual impairment and best practices. 

  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, services delivered, and assessment results. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education of the Visually Impaired, Special Education, or a related field. 

  • Valid state Professional Educator Certificate in Visual Disabilities (or eligible for certification). 

  • Proficiency in Braille (preferred certification in Unified English Braille). 

  • Experience with assistive technology devices and software (screen readers, magnification tools, braille notetakers, etc.). 

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. 

  • Ability to travel between schools/sites as needed (mileage reimbursement provided). 

  • Experience working with students with multiple disabilities. 

  • Certification or endorsement in Orientation and Mobility (COMS) is a plus but not required.
